This is a great place to have dinner with your family. A relaxed atmosphere. My favorites are the lettuce wraps. I love that I can get Chinese food and order Sushi at the same place.

I used Yelp to find a Chinese restaurant around my parents house. The service was good and delivery was also quick. Food was fresh and still very warm when delivered. The servings were also generous. Definitely would order again.

it's a chinese & sushi combine. one of favorite in gables. :-)

Do not know what happened to this place, but in the 80's and 90's we used to rave about the honey chicken at this place and at least once a week it was mandatory we eat from here! It used to come already cooked with the sauce, now it comes on the side and it super thick gold sauce that looks like epoxy. Not very cheap either, for what you get anyways.

This is the original Canton branch (at least that's what my dad told me). It's been around for a while. They serve authentic Chinese and Americanized Chinese. They also serve up Sushi Maki (both related businesses), so you can get both your Chinese and Japanese here. Staff here is helpful and friendly. Great atmosphere. Food is pretty good at at a decent price.

Eh. Chinese food in South Florida is typically mediocre, and this place was......well.....mediocre. Even by South Florida standards, there are better options available.

  • Christina C.

Good Chinese takeout at a reasonable price.... with the added bonus of the full sushi bar (by Sushi Maki). Some of my favorites: special fried rice, egg drop soup, pepper steak, and fried wontons. Reasonably priced and quick service.

Like a comfortable old shoe. I've been going to this place forever. It's ok and not expensive. The real popular option is take out. The honey chicken with a side of sweet and sour sauce, crab rangoon, some spring rolls and veggie fried rice. It isn't great but it's inexpensive and they are quick. I am looking for a better place!

It is cheaper to buy Chung King from Publix and it tastes better. It is like going back in time, you get a good idea what uninspired 1960s food was like in America by coming here.

Good to very good Americanized Chinese food. Tea and fried noodles when you sit down. Sushi is ok/good, fresh but inexpensive, but not for the adventurous. Quick service, cold beer, hot sake.

WOW, delivery guy dissed me, apparently $2 tip is not good enough. Good job, Canton! Nevermind that I have been waiting for about an hour. For the record, I have been ordering from this restaurant for over 4 years. Never have I felt this pissed.

I been coming here for years for family events and occasions, it's a great place nice and quiet. Food is delicious and affordable that can be shared with friends and family members. When you get there ask for Juan he is the best and very attentive. Thank you Juan! Also parking in the street isn't an issue I usually find a spot right up front, but parking in coral gables is meter parking :/ besides that I would definitely be coming back!

Just like I remembered growing up. Group of 6 people for dinner during Carnaval on the Mile - as we were trying to escape the rain. Good food - Chinese staples. They ran out of the beer, but mainly because we kept ordering rounds. I don't come here enough.

We always used to order from them but today the food was not good at all! I ordered chicken fried rice and orange chicken, the rice had chunks of chicken that didn't look safe to eat at all and the orange chicken looked like it had been made a while ago and just left there because the breading was soaked and the chicken tasted dry!

This place needs to close! So outdated. We came in here because it was late and it was one of the few things open on a Wednesday night. The table cloth was disgustingly sticky. The utensils looked like they had been used for about 20 years. Another scratch doesn't fit on those spoons. So nasty. The food isn't even as good as it used to be! So disappointing. On the bright side, the fortune cookies are good...

I personally love Chinese food but honestly I don't know how this place has been around for so long. I work in the Gables so every now and then someone suggests it since it's the only Chinese restaurant in the area. I have been here numerous times and have never been impressed. The food is not great and the service is terrible. The women behind the counter are extremely rude and insist that you can only have special fried rice for lunch in the restaurant....not for take-out. Who understands that? If I am going to pay for it what's the difference where i eat it? The last time I went my boss nearly gagged at her dish! We had to return it because it was not cooked right and I have not been able to return since. Besides that the parking is horrible because it is located right on Ponce de Leon Blvd.....very busy street! Do not go here! If you want good Chinese go to China Ocean on Miller and 152 far but worth it ...always fresh and very courteous staff

I usually go here for the wonton soup and so far everything is always good.

"First customer on a Saturday. The service was fast, but the food was terrible. The egg drop soup was lukewarm. The order of dumplings were not fit to eat. I'm not sure how they are still in business."

For fried rice and honey chicken that is ready to pick up in a short amount of time, Canton's has the tastiest variety around. For our family, a quick meal from Canton's is always a treat.

I had read up on earlier reviews and was happy to find such positive feedback on a place that I pass by almost every day. I was pressed for time and Canton did a great job at meeting with my time sensitive demands. My guest ordered the teriyaki chicken and was amazed to see abundance of food for such a low price. It came with a side of white rice, steamed vegetables, and a side salad. We ended up splitting the salad because she couldn't eat it by herself. Their ginger dressing was well balanced and delicious. I ordered a dragon roll which was great, but I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu on my next visit. If you live or work in the gables, you know that its very hard to find a restaurant that will give you expedient service if you're a man/woman on the run like me. Canton's service was very efficient. If you're thinking, "I wont have enough time to sit down......let's just go for sushi", think again, sit down and enjoy a second. Let them know you have little time and they'll take care of you. Hearty Appetite.

Best fried rice and chicken wings!! But when you call to place an order the ladies on the phone are WAY TOO RUDE!!! intolerable! You can barely understand what they are saying and they get mad for everything! But i still love it :)

I used to eat her as a kid and had awesome memories. I remember eating amazing Chinese food. I took my kids there on Saturday and have to say this is NOT the Canton I remember. Everything about the place was terrible. The food was bland and tasteless. The service was terrible. We left without eating our food. We took it to go and threw it away. I will NEVER eat there again! Yuck!

First few times I thought Canton was gret. They do have great lunch specials and leftovers are common. However, the last time I ate there the rice tasted less than fresh and..no pun intended...left a bad taste in my mouth.

Canton has very good quality for americanized style Chinese food. We dined there a few nights ago and had the Subgum War Bar and a Honey Chicken combo. First of all, everything tasted fresh, and the combo is a ton of food and we split the side dishes of egg drop soup, egg roll and spare ribs. Also, for those of you who really like the standard fare, fried noodles, theirs were high grade, crisp and tasty, not left out, thin or stale like they can be at less attentive restaurants... Canton's service was very attentive and courteous, overall pleasant. Their decor is a little boring, and the restaurant is not an ambience destination. The honey chicken was hot, and had just the right amount of honey but was nicely crispy on the outside. The egg rolls used to be better, but are still on the high end of what you find these days outside of the really "gourmet" style Chinese restaurants like New Chinatown who are far more expensive. The spare ribs are totally mind blowing at Canton, and might be worth the trip itself, or having as the entree! Juicy, with a light sweet glaze, they would have been the highlight were it not for the other entree we ordered... The Subgum War Bar is a fantastic dish and has a great presentation :) It's a pile steam cooked Chinese veggies with Shrimp, Roast Pork and Chicken that's served on a "sizzling" platter... basically, the server brings the dish to the table and then, adds the seasoning right there in front of you, which makes the platter sizzle and steams the meal right there at the table. If you've been to one of the Canton restaurants before, their signature dish is a steak served in a similar manner. This however is really a hidden gem on the menu because the presentation, aroma and taste is just off the charts. There's got to be some wow factor for me to hand out a 4 star review, and between the overall quality and the exciting entree, that's something serious for the tastebuds. Their food is outstanding, service is great, ambience, well... they do takeout and delivery too ;) Enjoy!

The fried rice and sweet and sour chicken taste like a dead roach. There were 10 horror stories. It is amazing how this place still exist. I guess for sentimental reasons only. Actually I recall the fried rice taste like raid!

Sorry :/ I noticed that this place got pretty solid reviews, but I ordered from here last night for delivery, and honestly, I was not very impressed. The honey chicken was a bit dry and didn't taste fresh at all. I also ordered the general tsaos, which was okay, but I've definitely had better. The only reason they are getting 2 stars, opposed to 1, would be the super speedy delivery. Overall, it really was just "eh" and I certainly wouldn't order from here again.

what i like most about this canton is that it's got a sushi maki inside. so if you feel like sushi, chinese, or both, you can have it all here. this is probably the restaurant i visit the most. the crunchy noodles with duck sauce is a great way to start off your meal experience & it's free! the staff is friendly & attentive. i absolutely LOVE the dragon roll, sushi maki makes it best & their eel sauce is so good too- my favorite eel sauce by far. the canton steak i also recommend.

Hey! Your food wasn't very good and your service was terrible but can someone PLEASE bring me the check so I can pay and get out of here! Not the worst Chinese food I've had but not for lack of effort. I don't know what we could have done to tick this waitress off but dang. After 20+ minutes that we had finished eating I got up go get someones attention so we could have some water to wash the taste out of our mouths and the check so we could pay and leave. The waitress stomped out of a booth she had been sitting in and all but threw the check at us. Having waited tables I kinda think that sort of thing isn't too good for tips or repeat business. I won't be back.

We ordered the honey chicken, wonton soup and pepper steak to-go today and the food was okay. The chicken was all-white meat, which is always a plus -- mystery meat is not my thang. But the service was not so great. First off, they wanted to charge me for the noodle-like crackers (you know, the crunchy ones that are always served in lieu of bread)..I'm not cheap, but she told me this tidbit AFTER I paid, and I couldn't charge the chump change on my credit card (I had no cash on me at the time). I told her that the crackers are free when you dine in, so what's up with the charge and she caved in with an exasperated, "Uh, ugh, fine, ok, you can have one pack for free." Yeah, thanks, lady. As I waited for my order, the hostess was clipping her fingernails in front of me. Hello? Am I the only patron who finds this act both unsanitary and utterly gross in a RESTAURANT? Ick. Yeah, no more Canton for me.

We used to eat regularly at the Canton in Coral Gables back in the 90's. Back then it was always crowded and often had a wait. Unfortunately it is now a has been with a hit or miss experience. We went back twice recently and the first time was O.K. and the second time not so O.K. The crowds are now gone and you eat at your own risk. The service ranges from good to what I remember back in China Town NY City where they would just sling the food over to you. One thing that did stand out was the the Spare Ribs.

Have to update my review because I order delivery from Canton almost once a week. I just love their food and they deserve another star to make it five. The people on the phone are so sweet to me and my food always comes fast and usually ahead of their time estimate. My favorite order is the shrimp fried rice, wonton soup, fried dumplings and beef ribs. Everything is incredibly fresh tasting and I always get compliments when ordering for a group. Long time customer (10 years maybe?) and they keep me coming back!

My wife and I have been going to cantons for many many years. We went last night and I enjoyed shrimp lo mein and my wife got a dragon roll.we also had a ginger salad each the lettuce was crisp and cold in the ginger dressing was perfect. My wife's dragon roll came out first and my shrimp lo mein came out shortly thereafter. Service was slower than normal and the food quality was good, but the price was very reasonable especially for the Gables. The atmosphere is mediocre at best and the booths are tight to get into. Foods I would recommend there are their Ginger salad the special Wong Ton soup in the egg foo yong's. The soup comes with chicken pork beef and shrimp with assorted vegetables and serves enough for three.

We have eaten here 3 times now, most recently for Christmas dinner 2014. The place has really grown on us and is much better than many of the reviews here. It definitely isn't the most "typical" Chinese joint out there, and if you only like the general tso's chicken type dishes you might not like it. But for one thing, they have the best steaks (yes steak) outside of the Flemmings, Mortons, Ruth's Chris high-end places. And the prices are very reasonable. The lettuce wraps are better than pf changs too...

I'm having a very hard time to find a good Chinese place in Miami. This place just continues the losing streak. Not recommended.

It's been there for as long as I can remember. I once saw a Sara Jessica Parker movie filmed there in the 90's. I don't think the decor or menu has changed. Is it great? No. But it's a 3 minute walk from my Miami personal injury law firm and I eat there probably once or twice a month. My recommendation is the steamed broccoli and chicken with brown rice. Hot tea and fortune cookie are always included.

Best Chinese restaurant ever. They're really nice and have your food ready almost immediately. Their desserts are rather expected but always delicious. Their special lo mein is my favorite.

When it comes to Chinese food I have always been extremely critical of Miami. I grew up in the Northeast and never ran into the same issues I do down here. First off I am a big believer in Chinese food being a late late night food, especially for drunken evenings. Therefore I am always amazed at how early Chinese food places close. Also, Chinese food is a take out thing for me, yet so many places in Miami set themselves up as sit down restaurants. Those issues aside because Canton suffers from both of them, at least Canton serves decent food. By no means was I blown away by what I ordered, which was Honey Chicken, but it was a decent lunch special. I tried some of the Sweet and Sour Chicken as well, which once again was good, but hardly blew me away. My go to is always General Tso's, but it was not on the lunch special and the waitress said she did not recommend it, which was strange to me. What really saves Canton was the crab rangoon, which were some of the best I have ever had. They cost too much, but they were well worth the price. I am sure I will be back because of the lack of quality Chinese food in Miami, but it will be more for value than anything else. One day Miami will figure out Chinese food, it is just not today.

Delicious! I was a bit skeptical but it was truly wonderful. The service was good, as well as the ambience. It was not too crowded, but I came early. The Sizzling Steak was the best in town and everything else was standard of a good, Cantonese Chinese restaurant. The prices were a tad high, but worth it. I'd come back, unfortunately Coral Gables is a hike.

My family and I have been ordering Chinese food from Canton since as far back as I can remember. Occasionally we'll dine-in on any given Sunday or even on Christmas day. The food is fresh and the restaurant is clean. I love that there's a Sushi Maki inside of the restaurant so that I can have both sushi and Chinese at the same time. A combination of the special fried rice, vegetable lo mein, Canton steak, and honey garlic chicken (or all) is usually what I order (to be shared with a large party, of course). The quality of service usually plays a large emphasis on all of my reviews, but Canton is perhaps the only restaurant I know that the food outweighs the horrible service. The waiters always have mean faces and just yesterday, two of them were actually screaming at each other across different ends of the restaurant. But, when I want to get my Chinese fix, they can go on full-blown combat so long as I can get my lo mein on!

This place really needs two different review columns. One would be for the mundane, americanized, overly fried, overly sauced variety of chinese food...the other would be for their more authentic menu that you actually have to request when you order. The former is quite unremarkable while the latter is actually pretty decent. Because of this, i've merged the rating to 3 stars. For all the reasons that I mentioned above, I will forego a review on their less than authentic menu. Its pretty blah, but I know some people out there might enjoy it. However, I have to say, I'm pretty surprised by their self titled "Authentic Chinese" menu. It is, by no means a comprehensive menu of all my favorite chinese dishes, but it does hit on some childhood favorites that you otherwise cannot get in Miami. When I went, I got the Salt and Pepper porkchops, the Cantonese style crispy noodles, and the stir fried bok choy. The pork chops were decent. It wasnt a home run, but many of the spices and flavors that should have been there, we there. The noodles, again, decent. A little TOO crispy for my liking, but the sauce softened them up like they should. The bok choy was good, though its pretty hard to mess up bok choy stir fried with some garlic... All in all, I would only order off of the authentic menu when I go here. Just make sure you request it. Otherwise they dont mention anything about it. Oh. and they should do away with the sushi bar. What the heck is that even about??

Great take-out Chinese restaurant in the Gables. The Dinner Combination Plates are a DEAL- large Soup, Egg Roll, Entree and Fried Rice for less than $10! I order get the Combo #2 with Chicken Chow Mien, Wanton Soup and Chicken/Pork Fried Rice...is less than $9. I also like the Honey Chicken, Chicken & Broccoli, Pork Chow Mien... The food is always, fresh, hot and tasty. It might not be authentic Chinese food, but as a born and bred American, I don't know the difference. If you call ahead with your order, it's ready for pick-up in 15 minutes. Also, the food is always well packed, labeled and organized....no spills in the car, which is always a plus. Delivery is also available, but pick-up is easy with dedicated pick-up only parking out front. The dinning in experience is lacking...bright lights, sticky tables, patchy service. Bottomline: Great, inexpensive take-out joint in the Gables.

I have been eating here for SO many years. At first I lived on SW 67th Ave and Dixie Hwy. area and went to the first one there. I still go once in a while. But now I live 5 blocks from this one in Coral Gables. The staff are so efficient. Food arrives fast and so consistent, you can always depend on the same high quality. And something else, the wait staff have been there for years also. So frequent customers are acknowledged. Delivery is fast. Pick-up any order in 10-15 minutes. I have never had anything here leaving me unsatisfied. I am a vegetarian and there are many items for me. And if you are vegan you just tell them and they will make anything they can for you without animals.

I am sad to give this restaurant such a low rating. I used to frequent here when I was a lot younger and the standards were much higher. To say this is an "authentic" Chinese restaurant is an understatement. I think the quality of the food has gone down. The dishes didn't stand out and if it did, it stood out for the wrong reasons. We got the fried sweet and sour pork, which was decent. However, I am used to boneless fried pork chop; I had to go through some that was all bone, no meat, and all batter. Uncool. I didn't pay to eat batter. Also, their beef noodles "hor fun" is not done in authentic Cantonese style! The noodles they use are too soft, thin, and fall apart. The noodles should be rice noodles and thick. If you opt for the "American-style" chinese food, then this place will probably be decent. But as far as authenticity goes, the rating is self explanatory.

  • Mark N.

pretty typical Americanized Chinese food, nothing special.. however I see from another review that there is a "Chinese menu" with more authentic stuff, I wish I had known about that because I used to live in California and like to have the "real deal" when it comes to Chinese and other Asian foods, but there was no mention of this other menu made to me so I did not know of it.. Place seems clean and is comfortable, but the food I tried was nothing special.

This place has been here since I was a child but now that I know better, I can tell you that it isn't great, not even good. I have given it 2 chances this year and both times I was disappointed. Bad food. If you want REALLY GOOD CHINESE, go to Tropical Chinese on Bird just west of 826... you won't regret it.

Horrible place. My friend got food poisoned which isn't the end of the world since the rest of us didn't, but just the quality and taste was very bad. Service was ok but the place looks run down. Don't recommend it!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
